im headed to miami with my dslr & lens in a photobackpack...do i need desiccants?

its hot and humid in miami. and im worried about taking my dslr from the cool hotel room to the hot humid streets of miami...ive heard i should use desiccants, but will it be effective in a backpack. (moisture will seep thru the zippers and once the desiccant is moist...its ineffective). can i get away without using desiccants how do i let my camera warm up slow enough not to develop condensation...

If you think you need dessicants, get them. Do not, however, get the little bags that the cameras and lenses come in, get a real package. there is a company named Midway that sells gunsmithing supplies and from them you can purchase dessicants that are in little metal packets that are about a big as a pack of cigarettes. They are reusable. When they change color, you put them into a oven and bake them for a while.

Canon Xsi - Great Camera, Now The Perfect Price!

I have had the Canon XSi for about 3 months and I am thouroughly impressed with it. This is my first DSLR and I was a little wary of going with a camera again and unproven, but I have always like Canon (I used an ELAN II in high school and I bought a SD600 about 2 years ago to take pictures my son). In general, I was not disappointed with the quality of the photos that the Canon XSi produces. The IS lens works great and I've taken some pretty amazing photos (at least for me). I have a couple of issues, both good and bad, that I think those who are looking for buying this may want to know.

Battery life - Great battery life. I must say, AMAZING battery life. I have taken over 5000 pictures and I only had to charge the battery twice.

Live View - LiveView is not for beginners. It is not a replacement for point and shoot. Can not be used in AUTO mode (Green Square). This is not that much to me, I prefer manual myself, but the whole point of this feature, I thought, was to make it more user friendly for the photographer "point and shoot. My wife can not use Live View in its current form ( I specifically bought a DSLR with live view function so she could continue to use the camera).

So, if Live View is a big selling point for you, you may want to look into some other (If not that big deal to you, then this is still an impressive camera - added 4/23/2008). If you do studio work, however, you can connect the camera to your PC and use it as a remote viewer. But there is a point and shoot camera in Live View. In my previous review, said it would be nice if Canon fixed some of the Live View issues with a firmware update, I was wrong. Live View is a nice feature once you understand that it is for beginners. In studio and landscape photographers will find Live View a great tool.

Image quality - I had some great success shooting in a studio setting as well as some outdoor shots. In the study, which used tungsten "hot" lights with subjuect on a white background. The pictures turned out great. Skin tones are perfect and there is little or no chromatic abberation at the edges. It shoots great outdoor shots as well. We just got into beekeeping and I could get some amazing photos of our outdoor bees nearby. The bees looked dirty and not very interesting from a distance, but I went macro photos are beautiful and full of wonderfully crisp details. The lens is a bit short, the quality of image you have of him is pretty good considering it only costs $100. I plan on buying a longer lens in the near future.

In general, the camera is solid and feels good in hand. Not too heavy, but still feels strong. If you can afford the higher price, I do not think it will be disappointed. If not, the XTi is still a great camera. And if you can afford to wait several months for the price to fall a bit (as I have!) I would. I was able to work a few extra weekend to afford to do this, and I can tell you that you do not mind a bit, because the quality of photos that I am doing has been totally worth it.

I was wrong when I said I could not use the 9-point autofocus in Live View. You can use the 9-point autofocus while in Live View, but the mirror down and focus on what you can not see what they are trying to focus on the camera until after the fact has gone through AF .

I've had this camera for almost two months and I am happy to report that the more you use, the more I love it. Once you learn the layout of the camera and load the MyMenu with the tools you use most often, the camera becomes a delight to use. I have taken over 5000 pictures with it so far and now I need a hard drive to put them all in.

I had the opportunity to rent a Canon EF 24-105 L IS lens and a Speedlite 580 EX II my sister's wedding. WOW! What great photos. The camera interfaces with the flash without problems and I am more convinced than ever that much of the quality of your photos come from the glass rather than using the camera itself (I think it is about 65% of target camera body 35% give or take a few points - I know some will disagree, but that's my take on it, and I'm sure if I had a 1Ds MkIII I would think it was a piece of glass as good enough for my camera).

This is a great beginner dSLR and a big camera around. I am very happy with my purchase and I have no regrets whatsoever about spending $ 900 to buy a great tool. Amazon now sells for $799, you can not go wrong at that price!
