Best camera for under $650/£400 – thinking about Canon G10?

I've been saving up recently for a really good camera and although I'd love to buy an SLR, i figured by the time I bought all the lenses + accessories i'd have spent way too much money. But at the same time I didn't want to go and buy just an average digital camera. So I've had my eye on the Canon G10 for a while now, anyone got any better suggestions or opinions?
