I've been saving up recently for a really good camera and although I'd love to buy an SLR, i figured by the time I bought all the lenses + accessories i'd have spent way too much money. But at the same time I didn't want to go and buy just an average digital camera. So I've had my eye on the Canon G10 for a while now, anyone got any better suggestions or opinions?

I've been looking at digital cameras because I'm likely getting a job soon and want to save up toward one and start a hobby. I want a DSLR --the one I've been thinking of is a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI. I'm wondering though about how I should go about purchasing lenses and accessories. The kit with a lens is ~US$100 more than the body only. Is it of good enough quality to buy it, and then save up for another lens later? (I was thinking of a 50mm prime lens later...)
I don't know a huge amount about photography or the science of how the lenses work/what all the terms mean, but I've been reading up. Links on that subject would be appreciated as well.

Also, what accessories should I get with the camera? I was thinking a camera, an extra battery, a big enough CF card(what size is reasonable?), a remote, bag, and a tripod.

Thanks for anyone who can help.
By the way, the kit lens with the XTI is a 18-55mm lens, which I've read isn't amazing or anything. Maybe someone who has bought it could attest to its quality(or partial lack lackthereof)?

Cokin Filters A & P series is one replacing the other?


I have a Fuji S9600 and was recently given a Cokin A series filter holder and some filters which I have enjoyed using. I put a ND2 Graduated filter on my birthday list and when Hubby went out to get it today the helpful person in the camera shop said that Cokin A series is no longer being produced and offered him a P series starter kit instead.

I have also heard that the A series filters also fit the P series filter if you use an additional adapter.

Any way I am now completely confused as to whether I should stick with my A series set or change to a P series .

Incidentally the Fuji S9600 has a 28-300mm lens and the A series doesn't quite work with the camera when set at the shortest focal length, basically the lens picks up part of the filter in the shot, it only disappears when the lens is set at around 35 mm.

Makes perfect sense. To my knowledge, Cokin is not discontinuing the A series (amateur). The A series is ideal for smaller digital cameras. For SLR and DSLR, you want to get either the P series (professional) or X-Pro series (if using really wide angles on a full frame body.)

As you mentioned, the A series is designed for focal lengths of 35mm or greater, so a P series filter is probably better for your camera.

Yes there is an adapter for P to A. It is Cokin P249.

Carmen: For a filter like a graduated/split neutral density filter, a Cokin or Singh-Ray filter is the way to go. These are also high quality filters.

How to clean and maintain a camera lens. Hint? Not with the tip of your shirt

You know how you go to the beach and get sand on your camera and on your lens and you take your shirt and…. Noooo! Cleaning a camera lens is a delicate task and doing it wrong can damage the lens permanently. Even fingerprints shouldn’t just be wiped off with the nearest available piece of cloth.

You don’t have to be a genius in order to clean your camera’s lens. It is a simple procedure that requires care and the right set of tools. Of course that most basic tool you’ve got is the lens cap. Not a cleaning tool as much as preventive equipment, the lens cap protects your lens and should be placed after every photograph taken. You should also try to avoid touching your lens. Fingerprints can damage the protective lens layer which is very sensitive.

If you find that your lens is dirty, you should always clean it in a sterile environment with a special lens cleaning kit that is available in all photography stores. The kit usually includes a small lens blower with a brush attached, a specialty lens cloth and a gentle cleaning solution.

When it’s only dust we’re talking about, use the lens blower to remove any particles that are on your lens. You can also use compressed air to remove anything that is on your lens surface. And while you’re at it, you can also use compressed air to clean the camera’s sensor. Just blow a small amount of air directly to remove particles off the sensor.

If it’s smudges, fingerprints or stains – clean the lens with the blower and look closely at the lens. Take the cleaning liquid and apply a couple of drops on your cloth, clean the dirty areas on the lens and leave the lens to dry.

A lens pen is also available in the market. It is a carbon based lens cleaner pen with a soft carbon tip that you can carry it along with you. Gently wipe the lens using the tip of the carbon pen to remove dirt without harming the lens or using cleaning liquids.

Same goes for those of you who use a point-and-shoot camera. Although it is less likely to get dust inside the body, the lens can easily get dirty with smudges or finger prints. Point and shoots usually have a much smaller lens and more precision is required here.

Remember that keeping your camera body clean is important as well. Use a soft damp cloth to clean the camera and wipe the camera filters that tend to get dirty and dusty and can damage your lens.

Honor Cord and Colors

An honors cord made of twisted cord with fringes. It’s awarded not only to members of honors society but also for various academic and non-academic achievements awards. Though it doesn't offer anything beyond basics, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S2100 is a decent AA-battery-powered entry-level compact.
Camera issue. Why will my camera not turn on without being plugged in when the battery is already full?

The person is offering a full refund but I want to know what this could possibly be! He said (of course he did) they checked it before they left and everything is fine.

But how can something with a full battery still need to be plugged in?

DSLR Camera Neck Straps?


Just curious, I purchased a new Lowepro neck strap for my Canon 50D to replace the stock strap that came with the camera. I noticed metal loops at the ends to attach to the camera. Won't these eventually scratch or wear the areas on the camera where they attach? Has anyone have experience with these....just purchased the camera and hate to scratch it all up this soon. Oh, and if anyone has suggestions on a neck strap it would be appreciated. Thanks!

It can be attached to the camera without the metal loops.
