If you could design a video gaming system, what would you call it and what would it have?


1. Name of system
2. Media (optical disc, Blu-Ray, DVD)
3. Storage
a. Internal (hard disk, Flash memory)
b. External (SD card, USB drives)
4. Graphics
5. Compatibility
6. Extras (just throw in some bonus compatibility or attachments just for the hell of it)
7. Others?

What would you like to see?

Before I list my ideas, I would like to say that if i see anything similar to this in any way shape or form, ill hunt you down and sue you O_o now to get started

1. I would name it something like Vortex or The Dimensia. (maybe the names need revising)

2. I would try to find a new technology that would eliminate Blu-Ray as first place, but would start with blu-ray.

3. I would make an internal hard drive that was replacable if needed (i dont think anybody liked having to go out and buy memory cards to save their games on with the PS1 and 2)

4. I would expect the media to help with the graphics, but I would like them to be realistic, with a beowulf look to it (watch the movie trailer to see what I mean if you haven't already)

5. I would want to make games exclusively for the system, but I would like it to be compatible with games for other platforms, like making it compatible with PS3 and xBox 360 games, etc.

6. Well, I would make the online playing network free; people like that better. I think that the Xbox 360 idea of achievements is a nice touch, maybe throw that in.... I would make the controler easy to learn how to use; I think that when xbox first introduced their controller, it made gamers learn a new style of play that was more difficuly while the playstation controller has a format more easily understood. Something in between.

7. The games should be enjoyable and dinamic, and they should contain more than one story line that seperatly include more than 4 hours of campaign that WONT agetaite the gamer, but make the experience fun. Deffinantly four player games, no one likes not being able to play with all of their buddys.

Coconut trees, blue skies, and white sandy beaches overlooking vast waters, these are the images that come to mind when speaking of the Philippines. With its picture-perfect landscapes and stunning seas, tropical Philippines continues to be one of the best spots to find natural idyllic scenes.
How can I get my camera to work without having to buy another memory stick?


I bought a 1GB memory stick for my Sony 3.1 almost a year ago because I am an ardent photographer.It has worked well until recently when it began to show a memory stick error.I pulled out the stick and pushed it back in.That worked for a while then I got a format error.I worked on the format then I got the C1301 or something error. A photographer friend erased the memory stick and saved the photos to his laptop.He transferred them to a jump drive (or something) and loaded them into my computer.I am thankful but the camera still does not work.He said that it may have a virus and I may need a new memory stick.He put one in but still got a memory stick error.We changed the batteries too. Nothing. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do now?I need a digital camera handy for those blue (king) herons,cranes,Pacific sea snakes in the Atlantic and shower of golden flowers with an inimitable fragrance.Please help me!

You don't mention whether you reformatted the card while in the camera. But if you didn't, you should.

But based on your description, I think that the card or card slot is dirty. Look at the metal contacts on the end of the card and clean any dirt. Then get one of the cans of dust blower and blow out the camera slot.

Did your card work in the card reader on your friend's computer? If yes, then the problem is probably in your camera slot.

How do you solve for x in mutli-power equations through setting something to 0?


I think I'm just having a brain fart here because I'm having trouble solving multi-power equations.

For example, how would you solve 4x(squared) + 12x -20 = 0 ? (that was completely off the top of my head, sorry if that gets complicated if you do it out) I know you'll end up with 2 answers as an "or" answer but what about this setting something to 0? Something's answering way in the back of my mind but I can't remember how to do it.

you factor it to (x-3)(x-3)=0
where X=3.

Multi-core Technology Will Have a Disruptive Impact on Your Business

Imagine that you have a factory with one assembler and one quality assurance (QA) engineer. Each item that the assembler churns out passes through the QA prior to being packed for delivery. As you add more assemblers on the factory floor, you will reach the optimum efficiency level of the QA engineer. Once you exceed this number, QA becomes the bottleneck.

Fast forward to present-day computing practices. Most enterprises practice the concept of one application per server. In a small business environment, this practice is acceptable as typically you only have a handful of servers performing all of the computing requirements of the business. Management is simple and straight forward.

In large enterprises you have hundreds or thousands of employees with operations situated at multiple locations. You have application servers supporting finance, logistics, human resources, production, purchasing, design and development. You also have your usual file and print servers, as well as several email servers strategically located by regions. IDC estimates that per dollar spent on buying a server, it will cost you $7 to manage it. Your TCO is now running out of control with almost no hope in sight.

To complicate matters, studies have shown that most applications do not fully utilize the computing resources of the servers on which they run. The utilization ranges from 5 to 10 percent depending on the application. Now you have the CIO demanding a recounting of resources and better justification for the request for a new server to house the new application.

Luckily an old technology once available only on very expensive mainframe computers has now found its way into the distributed world of UNIX and Windows environments. Virtualization allows you to create several 'virtual servers' that can house your applications. This raises the utilization levels of existing servers and increases productivity because setting up a new server for a new application will take only hours instead of days or weeks.

Complementing virtualization is a recent advancement in microprocessor design and manufacturing - multi-core. A multi-core microprocessor is one which combines two or more independent processors into a single package. For example, a dual-core device contains two independent microprocessors. With appropriate software, a multi-core processor can perform parallel execution of multiple software threads. The operating system (OS) perceives each of its execution cores as a discrete processor, with all the associated execution resources.

By enabling enhanced performance and more-efficient simultaneous processing of multiple tasks, multi-core processors promise to improve user experiences in both home and business environments.

Benefits of multi-core

Martin Reynolds, vice president at Gartner, believes that "the multi-core initiative is going to be the single greatest performance advance we've seen in the PC processor. For those applications that take advantage of it, you'll get a 50 to 60 percent performance boost. We haven't seen that since the original transition from the Intel 80286 processor to the Intel386 processor."

Multi-core processors allow you to complete today's computing tasks more efficiently and will enable entirely new computing experiences, and the benefits apply to server and client platforms, as well as the home and enterprise environments. Multi-core capability can enhance user experiences in multitasking environments, where a number of foreground applications run concurrently with a number of background applications such as virus protection and security, wireless, management, compression, encryption and synchronization.

By multiplying the number of cores in the processor, you dramatically increase the PC's capabilities and computing resources, which reflect a shift to better responsiveness, higher multithreaded throughput, and the benefits of parallel computing in mainstream applications.

In the Digital Enterprise

The steady increase in the density of systems in data centers is creating power and cooling challenges for many IT organizations. Part of the answer will be multi-core server platforms. By enabling a single processor form factor to serve multiple processor cores, these platforms will provide superior performance and scalability while remaining relatively constant in power consumption, heat and space requirements. As a result, more processing capacity can be concentrated into fewer servers. This means greater density and fewer servers to manage.

IDC's vice president and general manager of Enterprise Computing, Vernon Turner says that "when you quadruple the capacity of today's servers with multi-core processors, you can run new workloads. Typical 4-way servers will handle jobs that previously required midrange or high-end symmetric multi-processing systems. As a result, we will move complex business processes, databases, data mining, and inquiry and data intelligence applications onto industry-standard multi-core servers".

In the Digital Office

Multi-core processors hold the promise of sustaining the enormous increases in computer performance seen over the last quarter century. What will this performance mean for office productivity? Graphic designers, for instance, can render images much more quickly on multi-core systems. The greater responsiveness of multi-core platforms translates to less waiting for everyone in the digital office. For stockbrokers, this could literally mean dollars, as their computers enable more-informed investment decisions and faster trades.

For Mobile Users

Advances in wireless technology have taken mobile computing to places we never dreamed of. Today you will find a business executive working remotely in an airport coffee shop via Wi-Fi. Adding multi-core processors to the mobile mix will expand horizons even more. Incredible new mobile technologies will enable doctors in cities to remotely diagnose patients living in isolated locations (for example).

In 2006, we will see successful deployments of new PCs and servers that take advantage of multi-core technology. The new Intel duo-processor notebooks announced early this year are testament to this development.

"I firmly believe that multi-core processing will change the way we think, build, and manage IT infrastructures. Multi-core processors will be at the foundation of everything we do and how we think about computing," says Turner.

What would i need to create my very own flash game?


I've been wanting to make a flash game for a while now, but am not sure what i would need. Or what to do with it when i got it. Please help

Assuming you already have a game idea... here's what you'll need to do.

1) Get Adobe Flash Creator -- This is the actual software you need to create Flash animations & games. The actual name of the program is called "Adobe Flash CS4 Professional".

Please be aware that this software costs $700... but there are discounts for the student version. You can pick up a trial version at http://www.adobe.com/go/tryflash

HOWEVER, you don't absolutely need the latest version of the Flash creator software for this as the older versions work just as well. If you're looking save some money, look around for Macromedia Shockwave Flash Creator MX that creates Flash 6.0 / 7.0 items & supports ActionScript 2.0. How you pick up the software is up to you, but you do need at least one version of the creator software for this.

2) LEARN C++ -- Flash uses it's own programming language called "ActionScript" & there's now 3 versions of that (as it evolved over the various versions). You'll most likely want a version of the creator software to support ActionScript 2.0 or higher since it can handle more complex coding.

The main reason WHY I say to learn C++ is that ActionScript practically mirrors C++ in every aspect that I'm aware of. The only exception is that ActionScript is more flexible as it can be done either as time-driven programming (traditional method where the code is executed as written) OR event-driven (where code is executed only when a specific event happens).

Again, if you know C++... ActionScript will become second nature.

3) Get Graphics Editor (like GIMP) for artwork OR get somebody to create the graphics FOR YOU -- The majority of games out there have some amount of graphics. Therefore, you'll need a graphics editor to create the graphics for your game.

You can cough up another $700 for Photoshop CS4, but you can do pretty well with some of the free programs online like GIMP ( http://www.gimp.org ) or Paint.net ( http://www.paint.net )

HOWEVER, if your artistic skills hasn't really developed beyond grade school... You might want to hire, kidnap, blackmail, move in with or anything else to get a artist to do the graphics for you.

Once you have taken care these three requirements, you should have a decent game in the works... assuming your game premise isn't faulty.

What Google's Improved Flash Indexing Means for Your Website

What has changed?

Google can now index the textual content in SWF files of all kinds, including buttons, menus and self-contained Flash websites.

Google can also discover URLs that appear in Flash files and it adds these URLs to the crawling pipeline.

What has not changed?

Google still doesn't recognize the text that appears on images. FLV files, such as YouTube videos also won't be indexed because they don't contain text.

As many Flash websites consist of images and other multimedia elements, the only text that Google finds on these websites might be "Loading", "Please wait" or "Copyright".

Google also cannot execute some JavaScript types. If your website loads a Flash file via JavaScript, Google might not be able to find your Flash file.

In addition, Google cannot attach content from external sources that are loaded by Flash files. If your Flash page loads an HTML or XML file then these files will be treated as separate documents.

Why is Flash still a problem for search engines?

Flash content and regular HTML pages are fundamentally different. Just because Google can now index some text from Flash files doesn't mean that Flash files are now search engine friendly. Here's why:

  • It's hard to divide the text into meaningful sections. Flash doesn't use <h1> or <p> tags to separate different sections of text. It's hard to tell what's important and what's not. Even worse, Flash designers often break down words into their individual letters to create "cool" text effects. That means that search engines cannot index these texts.

  • Usually, the complete content of a website is presented on the same URL. You cannot link to a special part of a Flash website. That means that it is also difficult for search engines to find the relevant section of the Flash site.

    In addition, this means that Flash websites don't get good inbound links to the right pages. Most Flash websites only get links to their home page.

  • The structure of Flash websites makes it difficult to get high rankings. Many Flash files are linked from other Flash files and no other websites link to these internal Flash elements. The lack of links from other websites makes it very difficult to get high rankings for these elements.

  • Flash doesn't use the basic SEO methods. You won't find proper link texts, headline tags or even properly optimized title tags in most Flash sites. That makes it very difficult to get good rankings.

  • Most Flash content is still not crawlable. As mentioned above, Google won't index content in images and it has problems with JavaScript calls.

What can you do to improve your rankings if you have a Flash site?

If possible, avoid pure Flash websites and use Flash elements only when needed. If you must use Flash on your website, the following tips will help you to get better rankings:

  1. Include the text and the links from the Flash file in an HTML version on the same page.

  2. Use JavaScript and CSS to find out if the website visitor can parse Flash and then present the CSS DIVs that contain the corresponding content. Regular website users will see the Flash file, visitors who cannot parse Flash (for example search engines) will see the HTML version.

  3. Use CSS and create a layer with your regular HTML content and then position another layer with the Flash content above the HTML layer so that your website visitors only see the Flash content.

    Note that search engines might misinterpret this method as a spamming attempt.

  4. Use different URLs for different sections of your website. Each set of content should have its own unique URL.

Flash has not been designed for search engines and it is extremely difficult to get high rankings with pure Flash sites. Using regular optimized web pages is the best way to get in Google's top 10 results.

If you have a pure Flash website, you should make sure that your website has as many good inbound links as possible.

I am planning to purchase a laptop, what is best processor speed and memory for 360GB hard disk and which company and model I should look for.

How to record to USB memory?


I've been given a USB memory key with some assorted documentation on it (about 50 MB of PDF files). Now I ve read it all, I want to re-use the key for my own data. But my PC (running XP) sees it as CD drive. Clicking on its icon it comes up as Drive E, CD-rom. Free space 0, total memory 50MB. File system CDFS.
I have the impression that the USB key has somehow been "closed". It is impossible to erase data or record new data. There is no switch on it to block recording or erasing.
Any ideas?
I know memory keys are dirt cheap now - I've got loads of them, mainly promotional but this is the first time I've had one that is not re-usable.
I just didn't want to throw it in the bin. There is no slide switch on it.

It's quite possible if it's a "promotional" item that it is simply read only flash memory installed, and therefore not writable.

my new 4G key has about 40MB used for it's apps and other stuff that comes free, and it shows as a CD that cannot be uninstalled.

If you want a memory key, simply buy one, they're so cheap now . . . 4GB for about £16 (UK) from www.mymemory.co.uk Shame I'm not in the UK now I'd get myself one

Can you delete files from pre-loaded Promotional USB Memory sticks?

Picture the scenario. You have just taken receipt of your bright new USB Branded Memory sticks for an event that is due to commence in 2 days. You load the first of the USB Memory Sticks into your PC and to your horror you discover that the data has been loaded incorrectly or there is an error with the original information provided.  Apart from putting a wet towel over you head what options do you have? He’s a list of things that may help:

  1. Try to minimise the risk of this happening in the first place. Ensure your Custom USB supplier provides you with screen grabs of the data for sign off. Ideally ask for a pre-production sample of your Branded USB Memory sticks with the data preload. This way there little risk of any issues in the future.
  2. If the data is not protected or has an autorun. Then there are some easy solutions:

    • Delete the data from the memory sticks and re-load. Doing these individually is a painful and slow process and is not recommended for batches of over 100 units, unless you have an army of people to throw at this. This process is also prone to quality issues.

    • There are several data duplication companies in the UK that can take the Branded Memory sticks and format and reload the data relatively easily and quickly.  They can process up to 3000 memory sticks within a few hours. Job done.

  3. The nightmare scenario! If the memory sticks are data-protected or have an autorun it becomes far more complex. No surprise, as by the very nature the Promotional USB Memory Sticks are engineered to stop end users doing exactly what you want to do, namely delete and change the data. The software required to do this will be dependant on the controller that the Branded Memory Stick has been loaded with. The controller is the mini operating system that all USB Memory sticks have. Again there are several options to resolve this.

    • Return back to the manufacturer. They have the technology to format and reload the data, but the downside is that it will take time to return to the Far East, get them reloaded and shipped back. You would need to allow up to 2 weeks for this.

    • Some USB Providers will have the software to allow the data to be deleted in the UK. If not, ask them to try to obtain from the manufacturer. This would allow them to delete the data. Then the next challenge would be reloading the data. The easiest thing to do would be to load the new data with no protection or an autorun. However, if this is a pre-requisite then there are a few UK Data Duplication companies that have the capabilities of loading the data with copy protection and autorun. Again this will be dependant on the controller that is on the Branded USB Memory Drive.

The moral of this story is to ensure that you minimise the risk of this happening, by having a pre-production sample produced. Otherwise you will be entering a very stressful process and that towel will continue to get wetter!
